Update for 3/30/08

OK fine, so the long hours are finally getting to me and I’m unable to even kind of keep up with the updates. Here are a couple today to start to make up for it: One Year in Indiana by Kurt Dinse and The F.E.D.S. #5 by Steven Myers. And things might really, truly, I mean it this time be slowing down at work, which would mean normal updates by the middle of the week

Update for 3/27/08

Ok, so maybe saying I could keep up with updates was a bit much. New reviews today for Concepcion by Rickey Gonzales and Taproot by Matt Kish, things might quiet down a bit over the weekend, in which I have a ton of new stuff for the store again and will get caught up a bit with reviews. Or things might get suddenly busy again and you can disregard this message…

Update for 3/24/08

New review for Epic Tales of the Mundane #1 by Brad Dwyer, and I’m only working measly 12 hour shifts this week, so I should still be able to get at least most of the regular updates during the week. Yes, I am in fact happy about having my hours cut to “only” 12 a day…

Update for 3/22/08

Huzzah for being done with this first of many projects at work! The grand total: 11 days and 136 hours worked. Go democracy! Updates today for As Eavesdropped #2 by Suzanne Baumann and Breathers #1 by Justin Madson. I’m really hoping to get the updates back to normal for next week, I have a ton of new stuff to go into the store and I’m slowly shuffling the existing stock into alphabetical order. Hey, any web designers out there who would like to redesign things around here? I could pay a bit at least, and if you like comics enough (because why else would you be hanging around here?) I could work out some sort of lifetime comic discount. Anybody interested please send me one of those e-mail things.

Update for 3/16/08

Yes, a real update, although the reviews might be a little dopier than usual, with new reviews for Zombie Bob’s Resume of Jobs by Jimmy Proctor and The Mean Goat #1 by Kris Lachowski. It looks like more of the same at work for me next week so probably nothing new until the weekend. Hey, if you’re bored at work, just pick a letter in the author index and go down the line. I’ll bet there are people in there you’ve never heard of. Also, if anybody wanted to post a reader review or two for something, I’ll be happy to give it top billing this week…

Update for 3/15/08

Ok, so “sporadic posting” was a bit optimistic. For the curious, after work tomorrow I will have worked 85 hours this week, so at least I have a good excuse. I’m going to try and get a couple of reviews up tomorrow but next week will probably be pretty dead around here too. Sorry, but these people work hard on their comics and me coming in mostly brain dead from lack of sleep and rambling about these things doesn’t do anybody any good. More tomorrow…

Update for 3/9/08

I forgot some new comics for the store yesterday in all the recent confusion: Slither #1-5 by Kelly Froh, to go along with her other books that were already available. New reviews today for Slither #1 by Kelly and Spunj Baahb by Chris Cornwell, and I should also mention that I’ll probably be working a whole lot this next week to make up for these snow days, so posting may return to being sporadic over the next week.

Update for 3/8/08

New comics are up in the store! Everything is towards the last couple of pages for now, as I cycle through the incredibly obnoxious process of putting them in alphabetical order. The new books are: Slam Bang #3 Volume 2 and Slam Bang #1 Volume 3 (two anthologies edited by Allen Freeman); Blink #4 by Max Ink; Broads and Monsters and The Titusville Geek by Pat Lewis, Time Warp #1-5, The Cloud and Ten Itty Bitty Shitty Pieces of Art by Dan Taylor; and Ruffians #1-7 by Brian Canini, with a new review for Ruffians #7. Now I’m going to go play in the snow a bit…

Update for 3/7/08

Hey, snow day! Blizzard warning in central Ohio means I get to update the site, get out of work a bit early and maybe even have a day off tomorrow. Updates are for Lackluster World #4 by Eric Adams and Veggie Dog Saturn #2 by Jason Young, if I am around over the weekend I’ll post up all the new stuff for the store…

Update for 3/6/08

Hey look, an actual update! New reviews for The Lone (Red) Ranger by Phillip Skaggs Jr. and Neil Jam #13 by Neil Fitzpatrick. In case anybody was curious, my shift on election day was from 5:30am to 1:00am. And tomorrow starts a slew of 12 hour shifts, although I will try to get at least an update a day in here…

Boom Fantasy! #1

OK, granted, I have seen better titles, and in most cases if you’re trying to court the literate you might not want to throw a “4” in place of “for”. Just had to get that bit of nitpickery out of the way. The actual comic is entertaining enough, and that’s all that really counts. First up is the bulk of the comic, dealing with the two creatures on the cover who are on a seemingly endless space flight, one of whom is trying to compose his own music and is having a tough time of it. Oh, and they have a brief dance contest until one of them gets bored. Next is Cheese Solar, a paranoid captain of a space ship (no relation to the last story), probably the best piece of the bunch. Then you have the story of Skele-Ted, a new superhero who is sent out to fight a giant creature. I kept thinking this was a parody of superhero comics but really, it reads like a straight up action story. Up to you whether or not that’s a good thing. Finally there’s a brief activity corner in which the reader is encouraged to examine the last page of drawings and make a song out of it. Hey, I’m at least mildly curious what Phil got in the emails. $2, nothing spectacular maybe but a decent enough comic.

The Lone (Red) Ranger

Haters of 24 hour comics take note: there’s a giant warning for you right there on the cover. I love the concept, it’s the execution that often kills it for me. Really though, the bar is set pretty low: throw together an entertaining story and try to make the art as decent as possible. Phillips succeeds admirably in both counts. This is the story of a rejected Power Ranger, called Oomph Rangers either due to legal concerns or because it’s a genuinely different thing, I don’t know enough about them to be sure. This Ranger, after getting essentially banished, runs into a frog man, a brutal player of spoons, and several Pobbles, which are either killing machines or the victims of mistaken identity, it’s never made clear. The book does everything a 24 hour comic is supposed to do: it’s a fun book and it makes me want to see what else the guy has done. And, of course, it’s only a measly $1.

Update for 3/3/08

Just checking in to mention that I’m still alive, although I’ve been working all kinds of hours getting ready for this election. SPACE was great, I have many many new things to review (and quite a few new things for the store), and regular updates should resume either Wednesday or Thursday. Sorry about the holdup, everybody go vote tomorrow!
