Update for 11/30/09

New review for Asthma by John Hankiewicz (also available in the store), and I’ll return to regular reviews now, I was just annoyed by the fact that I still hadn’t reviewed Asthma.

Update for 11/29/09

New review for Astronaut Elementary #1 by Dave Roman, another book long available in the online store and still shockingly unreviewed.

Update for 11/28/09

New review for Hoax #2 edited by Karl Kressbach, as I’m continuing the long weekend of reviews for things that I never got around to for no apparent reason (that I also have for sale).

Update for 11/27/09

New review for Windy Corner Magazine #3, edited by Austin English and available in my store.  Hey, it’s the biggest shopping day of the year, I’m legally obligated to at least TRY to sell comics today.

Update for 11/25/09

New reviews today (as I was slacking yesterday) for Just A Man #2 by Brian John Mitchell & Andrew White and The Road To God Knows… by Von Allen.  No updates tomorrow, then regular updates for the rest of the long weekend is the plan, in case you were curious.

Update for 11/23/09

New review for Only Skin #4 by Sean Ford, a series that has been sorely missed around these parts for the last couple of years.  I should also point out that any comics orders placed between now and December 20th or so are guaranteed to get to you before Christmas.  If it needs extra fancy postage to make it in time, consider it my holiday gift to you.

Update for 11/22/09

New review for Publish You, an anthology edited by Gareth Brookes and a bunch of folks, containing even more folks.

Update for 11/21/09

New review for Slam Bang Volume 2 #6 edited by Allen Freeman and containing all sorts of people.

Update for 11/20/09

New review for Big ‘Un Visits the City by Brian Leonard, and sorry about the missed update yesterday, I’ll try to get something extra up over the weekend.  The operative word there is “try”.  Hey, I’ll still do regular updates all weekend, what more do you want?

Update for 11/18/09

New review for Funny Misshapen Body by Jeffrey Brown, just in case some of you weren’t aware that it existed or something.

Update for 11/17/09

New review for Jumbly Junkery #8 by L. Nichols, and everybody got the memo yesterday about me needing new comics, right?  Good…

Jumbly Junkery #7

Is it possible for one person to make an anthology?  I never thought so, but the sheer range of stories and artwork in this one make me wonder.  The bigger pieces of past issues are gone (I think the biggest piece is 3 pages), but variety is the theme for this issue.  The “normal” pieces in here include L. wondering if she’s ever going to have the one moment where she joins the sisterhood of women, drinking too much coffee, wondering what makes cats tick (and if they’re inherently good creatures), trying to pick out the things that separate people from animals while walking through a crowd, how Obama easily beats the lowered expectations left over from his predecessor, using cats like skates, whether or not it’s wrong that she loves one cat more than the other, and the thought process of a cat when it sees a box.  Mixed in with these pieces are the ones where she’s branching out (and I’m not going to even try to analyze them one by one), dealing with themes such as the unreliable nature of memory, machines as the imperfect perfection of man, happiness, the language of the body, a nightmare, process, and Narcissus.  The Narcissus piece was notable because she uses nothing but a collection of short lines to form the whole, it’s a deceptively simple and impressive story.  All this and I almost forgot the story at the center of the comic, a color piece about a man who became paralyzed due to his fear of death and was promptly buried alive.  It’s an eclectic bunch of stories, that’s for sure, and if you’ve been waiting to check out her work for some reason this one is the one to get.  You’ll certainly see a wide range of her talents.  And what does it say about me that of all the stories available here to sample, where she uses a wide variety of styles, I went with the cute cat page?  $5

Update for 11/16/09

New review today for A Really True Story by Lisa McDonnell.  I should point out that the review pile is getting slim again, so if you’re looking to get some exposure for your book before this holiday season, send ’em my way!  I am only rarely a total dick in my reviews, and maybe that mythical rich person who loves small press comics will see your stuff and hire you to live in their mansion and be their permanent artist.

Update for 11/15/09

New review for Reich #6 by Elijah Brubaker (also available in the store), and I am now sad that there are no more new issues of this wonderful series to read.  For now at least…

Update for 11/14/09

New review for Shitbeams on the Loose #2, edited by Rusty Jordan and containing all sorts of comics folks.  See for yourself if you don’t believe me!

Molgar Bag Digest #2 (with Brent Harada)

I’m speechless.  That’s never stopped me before, and I’m sure I’ll manage to ramble for an acceptable amount of time before giving up, but I genuinely have no idea what to say about this.  That sample should tell you all you need to know.  This is another mini with as fantastic a selection of images as you’re likely to see anywhere, all unencumbered with anything as old fashioned as a story.  There were a couple of pages there where the same character seemed to reappear, and a few times when actual words and sentences crept into the pile of images, but this was rare.  This doesn’t mean that I hated this; far from it.  The trouble with this site is that I try to do at least a little more than say “wow, that was cool.  And bizarre” and leave it at that.  Why?  Good question.  The point is to try to inform you folks, I suppose, although this is one of those rare cases where I can’t say a damned thing that will make you understand this any better than if you just went to the website or took a few minutes staring at the sample.  I will say that I was constantly impressed with the level of detail in every panel.  Seriously, there was very, very little space wasted in this comic, and these two (assuming that they’re both working on everything) are impressive artists.  They also have a profound understanding of the creepy, and there are at least a few pages in this that have burned their way into my brain.  It was really tough to pick the sample page, which is always a good sign.  Send the man about $3, check it out for yourself.

Update for 11/13/09

New review for Ink Weed by Chris Wright, and it’s the last of the new things from Spark Plug books to be available in the store.  If you were waiting until they were all up so you didn’t miss anything great, I may have inadvertently saved the best for last…

Update for 11/12/09

New review for Watusi’s Doghouse Funhouse, edited by Dale Martin and featuring all sorts of folks.

Update for 11/11/09

New review for Pat Makes Drawings #2 by Pat Aulisio.  Um, happy 11/11?

Update for 11/10/09

New review for Rock That Never Sleeps by Olga Volozova & Juliacks, newly available in the store along with Olga’s The Airy Tales.  This leaves only one new book to add to the store at the moment, and it’ll probably have to wait until the weekend with my work schedule being so crazy.  I know, the suspense is probably killing you…
